The Heart Wants What it Wants

James Major certainly didn’t win any awards for boyfriend of the year. In all honesty, Cecily never really thought of all the people out there, that she would end up calling him just that, but she had, and it was still the weirdest label she had ever given him. It had been a more heat of the moment thing, where emotions were apparently said and then the question was in the air. If they should make it official or not? If they were to be a bloody couple or not? In the end, it had just seemed like the best and most logical solution to be an official couple. And it had been great for the first few months, but as time passed, she knew that it wasn’t quite the same anymore. She honestly couldn’t properly remember the last time that he went over to her place, and actually stayed the whole night. They would go out to some place, where he would spend the majority of the time talking to his friends, Cecily left in some kind of corner all on her own, then they would go back to her place, where she would wake up in the middle of the night, alone in her bed, like she was just some sort of one night stand.

She had classes that afternoon, and then again onto the evening, so she hadn’t even bothered to text James and ask what he wanted to do that night. Maybe she could just stay in her place, order some food and catch up with whatever show she was watching on Netflix. Though she was in the middle of one of her classes, when her phone, that had been sitting on the edge of her desk, buzzed, the twenty one year old reached for her phone and noticed a message from her boyfriend. ‘What are you doing tonight? Party at Mark’s at 10pm, you in?’  The text read and she sighed, trying to focus on the lesson, but then her phone buzzed again, and she lifted it slightly, to look what it said. ‘We can go over to mine afterwards‘ She sighed and listened as the professor continued to speak about the day’s lecture, but the words were just words being echoed through the room, as she couldn’t really process them properly. ‘Sure, pick me up 9:45 at my dorm.‘ She sent the text and sighed once again, not even managing to focus once on the lesson, but she certainly couldn’t just listen to the professor and take in the important parts of the information that he was giving to the students.

When the lesson finished, she just went to her next one, but once again, Cecily didn’t really manage to focus on her lesson. Thankfully there hadn’t been anything too essential. Making her way back to her dorm, she took a shower, and changed onto some clothes that were suitable for the party that she would be attending. She had been in front of her mirror, putting on her make up, when she noticed her roommate walking inside of the room. “Going out?” She asked the blonde and Cecily took a deep breath before nodding “Yeah, James is taking me to this party.” She didn’t need to look over to the other to know the frown that had formed on her roommate’s face. “Ugh why haven’t you dumped that loser already? He’s a horrible boyfriend, when was the last time that he did something for you? And not just dragging you around, like you’re just a whore that he sleeps with?” Closing her eyes, Cecily took a deep breath and considered the words that were being said to her, Angela, her roommate, was absolutely right. She was miserable most of the time, he didn’t treat her properly, certainly not in a boyfriend kind of way. So maybe breaking up was just the best for her. Maybe then, she would be able to start feeling a little better. She didn’t reply to her roommate, and just finished getting ready, in silence.

Perhaps breaking up was the best decision, sometimes you had to make a small little sacrifice, to make way for better things, but was she really ready to let go of him? She didn’t know, but it could be for the best, for both of them. Yes, Cecily made the decision that she was going to be breaking up with him that night. The clock marked 9:45pm, and just as they had scheduled, he appeared in front of the door to her dorm and knocked. She took a deep breath, looked at her reflection in the mirror, for the nth time already, and then moved to greet him. But when her eyes landed on the familiar figure, she completely lost all the courage for breaking up with him. She gave him a small smile, and allowed James to bring her close as he kissed her. Every single time he kissed her, it was absolutely consuming, it was like she could never get enough. When he pulled away, Cecily looked at him and grinned “Hey to you too.” She said, and took a few steps backwards, following after him down the corridor and then over to his car, where he drove the two of them to the party that they were going that evening. The car moved down the street, and she used the time to do some checking on her make up, when they stopped in front of a house, she looked over to the place they would be heading that evening and nodded. Looked just like a regular Wednesday.

The loud music wasn’t exactly all that appealing to her, as Cecily sat next to James on the couch, but her attention was on her phone, using it to distract herself. She didn’t know why she would have expected anything different, as usual, he had just ignored her the moment they stepped into the party, talking to his friends, leaving the young woman on her own. Taking a deep breath, she drank the last of her drink, and started to walk away from the party, until she reached the front of the house, that was now empty. Reaching inside her bag, she took out a cigarette and lit it, slowly inhaling the smoke, and the blowing it out onto the wind, the loud music coming from the house, still echoing in the back. She was half-way through her cigarette, when she heard a familiar voice talking with her. “You know those are bad for you.” James spoke, and she just chuckled, giving a shake of her head and offering him the cigarette she had been smoking. He took it from her and then took a long drag out of it. “So you wanna get out of here? This party’s a bust.” He asked her, and she offered him a hand, for him to help her up. “Yes, please.” She spoke, once she was up again. “Okay, we can go back to my place, unless you want to go somewhere else.” She shook her head “No, your place is fine, it means you don’t get to leave during the night.” Cecily grinned, but didn’t let go of his hand, allowing him to lead the way back to his car. Maybe their relationship wasn’t perfect, but honestly, which relationship was?
